Saracens Head Inn

Saracens Head Inn

For hundreds of years ferries linked communities living on either side of the river, enabling foot passengers, cargoes and even animals to cross the Wye.

This is a hand powered ferry – the ferryman pulls the ferry to the other bank, using a cable which crosses the river overhead. Taking only a few minutes, the ferry saves a five mile trip by road. In 1800 there were twenty-five ferries between Ross and Chepstow. This is the only surviving traditional hand pull ferry still working regularly on the Wye.

The Inn has stood for centuries in a spectacular position on the east bank of the River Wye, where the river flows into a steep wooded gorge, on the edge of the Forest of Dean, in Symonds Yat East.
